Scott, You are right on the money with your evaluation. As an affiliate program OPM I have to inform (sometimes fight) my clients and their in-house or exterior SEM company teams to explain how affiliates work and how the client wants them to compete. I like to use a line I heard Anthony Bajoras of move marketing say at teh Affiliate Summit in Miami" "Do you want to block your affiliates from taking over the bid slots or just let your competitors take them?"

And, it is always amazing to me that people don't understand "margins".

But this also gets to be an emotional issue. Sometimes I win and sometimes I don't.

As to affiliate networks managing PPC, wow what a bad idea. Especially if you want to run a good affiliate program. One of my clients was actually approached by his affiliate network offering to run his PPC program, since as they said: "they had all of the affiliate data, they could really make it work great."

As an affiliate manager, I am not motivated in wanting to take a chunk out my affiliates hard earned work.
